Conflict and oppression have turned Gaza into what many describe as the world’s largest open-air prison. The people of Gaza endure unimaginable hardships—daily bombings, violence, kidnappings, and a relentless struggle for survival. Yet, this is just the surface of their pain.
Families face unemployment rates exceeding 80% as damaged infrastructure leaves them without work. Food and shelter are scarce, water is contaminated, and access to medical care and education is severely limited. Children sift through rubbish to find something to sell, while others are unable to attend school because they must work to support their families. Many children don’t even have shoes.
One family lives next to a rubbish tip in Khan Younis, where insect infestations and snakes are part of daily life. The first sister’s husband is injured, the second sister was abandoned with children to care for, and the third’s husband suffers from a mental disability. They survive by collecting potatoes from the rubbish.
